June 10, 2000 - Round the Island
Race. Just under 1,600 boats took part in the annual Round
the Isle of Wight race, popular with a broad range of craft from the
huge catermeran Playstation to open clinker built day boats. A total of 11
J92's took part split across 4 classes. Jammin won her second RTI outright
and was top J92. She had a close battle with Just Enough who lead for the
first 50 miles only to be overtaken on the final beat to the finish. Pic#1:-Jabberwoky gybes for the Island Shore - a slow trawl into less breeze saw her drop behind us but she picked up the favorable tide first to turn a reasonable deficit into a 20 mins lead versus Jambalaya. Pic#2:-Jupiter on the final beat to the finish Pic#3:-On the rail of Jambalaya approaching the 'forts' which guard the Eastern Entrance to the Solent Andy Bird |

Royal Southampton Clarkson Cup | May 25, 2000 - Royal Southampton
Clarkson Cup. Single day with 3 races back to back. Jos of Hamble,
Jambalaya and Just Enough. Sailed in a building breeze, Just Enough
damaged her main in race two and had to retire. Race 3 saw Jambalaya sail
with her #4 whilst Jos tried to hold onto her 140% #1. With more crew on
the rail to compensate for Jos's overpowered sail plan it was very even up
the first beat, Jambalaya leading the way. On the run Jambalaya blew out
her full size kite whilst gibing when a 35 knot puff came through. Jos set
her brand new heavy reacher and established a comfortable lead. The next
beat saw Jos change her head sail and she was bear headed for a while.
This allowed Jambalaya to make up lost ground and it was a tight battle to
the finish, Jos hanging on to win. A good series from Jos who finished
fourth overall and top J92. www.rsyc.org.uk - follow links to racing, there is a report also and a photo of Jambalaya Andy Bird |
